McLagan is the leading provider of compensation consulting and pay and performance data for hedge funds.
We provide:
Annual pay surveys covering all functions (e.g., investments, sales, and administration) and position levels (e.g., COO through entry-level staff). The quality of these surveys is evidenced by our client list – over 70 organizations participate (17 of the top 20 as ranked by Alpha).
A range of proprietary studies focusing on hedge fund HR and business practices related to: benefits, staffing levels, title structures, incentive plan design, etc.
Compensation consulting assistance related to benchmarking competitive pay level and practices; designing annual, long-term and sales incentive plans; and providing senior management teams with pay advisory services.
We provide hedge funds with three types of consulting assistance:
Benchmarking, with examples of recent projects including:
Assisted a large multi-strategy hedge fund in identifying pay rates for its senior top management.
Helped a hedge fund of fund firm review competitive pay levels for staff in all of its global locations.
Incentive plan design assistance, with examples of recent projects including:
Provided a top 10 hedge fund of fund firm with assistance in revising the design features of its annual bonus plan and sales commission plan.
Helped a mid-size hedge fund design a bonus deferral plan.
Pay advisory services, which includes:
Helping the COO of a leading hedge fund assess incentive plan alternatives.
Providing year-end pay trend assistance to C-level executives at several of the largest hedge fund firms.
Complementing our annual pay surveys and ongoing compensation consulting work, we conduct a series of studies, including:
Benefits Study: Includes information regarding medical coverage, life insurance, disability, 401(K), time-off policies, and fringe benefits offered by hedge funds. Over 45 hedge funds and fund of funds are participating this year.
Title Structure: Analyzes the different ways that hedge funds use title hierarchies, the prevalence of titles, the benefits associated with specific titles, etc.
Staffing: Provides information about staffing levels by function, in aggregate, and in relative terms.
Incentive Plan Approaches: Instead of focusing on how much this study reviews how pay is actually delivered (e.g., the structure and design features of PM/trader incentive plans), when it is delivered, and answers other market practice questions.
