Private Equity

McLagan works with over 150 leading firms in the Global Private Equity arena.

The benchmark survey product is part of the McLagan's annual survey program of compensation practices for financial services employees and is focused exclusively on individuals undertaking Private Equity/Venture Capital activities. The benchmark survey covers both investment professionals and non-investment professionals supporting the private equity business globally.

The private equity investment activities captured independently within this survey include both Direct Investments (General Private Equity, Buyouts, Venture Capital, Real Estate, Mezzanine Finance, and Infrastructure) and Indirect Private Equity Investments (Fund-of-Funds and Secondary Investments). The non-investment professional functions covered include Investor Relations, Finance, Legal & Compliance, Human Resources, IT Support and Secretarial Support.

The benchmark survey collects and displays all compensation elements including base salary, cash bonus, long-term incentives, and any recent allocations of carried interest. Results also have the capability of being highly tailored to ensure appropriate and accurate market comparisons and has been structured as a global product, with specific coverage and reports created in the major regions (e.g., US, UK, France, Germany, Benelux, Nordics, Japan, Australia, India, Hong Kong and China).

Complementing these proprietary studies is our consulting services that help clients align their pay systems with their business and human resource strategies. Our expertise in compensation helps us complete customized business benchmarking projects. We provide our clients with information and insight that helps them make better business and pay decisions.

McLagan has recently completed compensation plan design, benchmarking and advisory/counsel work for private equity firms as follows:

  • Assisted in the development of compensation strategy for a leading private equity group captive within a larger investment bank with particular emphasis on linkage to business strategy, stage of development and resource profile.

  • Benchmarked compensation levels and developed annual and long-term incentive plan designs (including carried interest plans) for a variety of private equity firms.

  • Assisted in structuring and defining pay approaches/strategy for a mid-size independent fund-of-fund firm expanding in the US and Europe.

  • Provided benchmark comparisons of most recent compensation levels for a leading private equity firm.

In addition to the annual pay level benchmark report, McLagan also produces a Private Equity Pay Practices study which provides an in-depth market commentary on the administrative practices and compensation trends prevalent in the private equity industry.

The report provides not only information on staffing levels, fund sizes, fee structures and investment approaches, but also presents the findings from key compensation program elements, including carried interest and co-investment plans.

Data is submitted via a detailed electronic questionnaire to facilitate the response process.
